To find out the levels of Prostate specific antigen as a part of early diagnosis or monitoring of the disease. This test is for you if

  • you have sign and symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (urge, dribbling and frequent urination)
  • you have sign and symptoms of prostate cancer (change in size or consistency of prostate)
  • you have tender prostate and painful ejaculation
  • you have a history of prostate cancer
  • you have a family history of prostate cancer
  • you want to monitor the response of therapy
  • you have frequent backache, rectal or pelvic pain

Preparing for your test

No special preparation is needed although patients should avoid ejaculation and heavy exercise 48 hours prior to sampling. Please DONOT take the test within 7 days of digital rectal examination or urinary tract infection.

After the test

After your specimen is taken, it takes a few business days to process and report it, although processing time varies for individual tests. You will receive your results with a relevant reporting. In case of results that are outside the expected ranges, please consult you PCP or Health care coordinator. Please note higher levels can be due to inflammation or other benign conditions. Always discuss the results with your Healthcare provider as this test aids in identifying prostate problems so that you can make informed decision about your health.
